Description

This is a patient (my brother, Marc) being prepared for total body irradiation at UCLA. He told me afterward he didn't feel anything.

Marc has masking tape over his shoulders to help keep him in the correct position. There is a clear Plexiglas panel to his left, which is used to hold lead "blocks". These are forms which block radiation from the lungs and other vital organs. They are custom-made for each patient.

The procedure takes around 10-15 minutes, and is repeated twice daily for 4 days. It can only be administered once in a lifetime. (date: 2002-01-15)
